About

Peace River School Division (PRSD) is proud to be able to offer alternative education to students in Northern Alberta. We endeavor to work with parents to offer the best educational experience for your child. Our mission is “Learning Together, Success for All” and we want every student to reach their highest potential. Peace River School Division wants to ensure that every student in our division gets the very best that we have to offer. We are now offering many more choices for your child’s education including teacher-directed virtual and distance education, parent-directed traditional home education, and a blend of both. We are also pleased to work with parents in their efforts to support self-directed or child-directed home education. We look forward to serving the needs of every child in our boundaries and beyond.

Parent-Directed Home Education

Consistent with the Home Education Regulation, PRSD is proud to support parents in home educating their children with the ongoing support of dedicated Home Education Facilitators who are Alberta certificated teachers.  Your Facilitator meets with you to support you in the development of a home education program that meets your child’s needs and provides ongoing support as often as you wish.  Well-versed in and supportive of parent-led and child-led approaches, the Home Education Facilitators also organize a homeschool support network and organize activities and field trips designed to keep you connected throughout the year.

Teacher-Directed Virtual and Distance Education

Parents who wish to access programming from an Alberta certificated teacher, following the Alberta Program of Studies, have a variety of options:

Grade 10 to 12 teacher-directed students have access to both synchronous and asynchronous programing:

  • Synchronous courses are delivered through PRSD’s Grade 10-12 Virtual Education Program (VEP) where courses are timetabled by semester and students are required to join live virtual classes through Google Meet at set times each day with other students.  Students require a compatible device such as a Chromebook, laptop, or desktop computer with a working webcam and microphone, and consistent high speed internet able to support Google Meets.  For more information or further details, please contact us.
  • Asynchronous courses are delivered through Peace Regional Outreach Campus and the Fairview and Area Learning Store where students are able to set flexible timelines and access support from teachers as needed either in-person, over the phone, or through Google Meet.  Courses can be started and completed almost any time during the school year and most are available in paper or online formats.  For more information or further details, please contact us.
  • Students are able to take a combination of synchronous and asynchronous courses to best-meet their educational needs.  Please note that for both synchronous and asynchronous courses, some assessments will need to be completed and supervised in-person at an approved site such as the nearest PRSD school.

Grade 4 to 9 teacher-directed students have access to asynchronous programing.

  • Teacher-directed students have access to asynchronous programming that is complemented by regularly scheduled Google Meet support check-ins with their teacher.
  • Students access asynchronous online courses from home and work at their own pace with regularly scheduled Google Meet support check-ins from their teacher.  Students require a compatible device such as a Chromebook, laptop, or desktop computer with a working webcam and microphone, and consistent high speed internet able to support Google Meets for teacher check-ins.  A home printer and scanner is not usually required, but some students may prefer to complete some activities on paper and submit them online.  For more information or further details, please contact us.
  • Please note that some assessments may need to be completed and supervised in-person at an approved site such as the nearest PRSD school.  For younger students and those needing additional support, regular parental supervision and support is required for student success.

Grade 1 to 3 teacher-directed programming is not available at this time.

Shared Responsibility Parent/Teacher Education

Are you comfortable teaching your child in English Language Arts but not sure how to guide them in Math?  You may be able to build a Shared Responsibility program that formally includes both parent-directed and teacher-directed programming.  PRSD offers this blended programming so that you can avail yourself of certificated teachers delivering the Alberta Program of Studies for some aspects of your child’s education, while retaining responsibility for other aspects.  In some cases, a Shared Responsibility program could mean that your child spends some time in your local PRSD school if desired and where possible.
